They weren’t WITCHES, they were WOMEN

EL DOCUMENTARY

The cherry on top of the campaign was the making of the documentary Witches, the great lie, directed by award-winning director Joanna Pardos. This documentary blends elements of fiction with true crime.

Witches, the great lie was the lead segment in prime time in the Sense Ficció program on TV3.

The documentary premiered to cap off the campaign at an event organized by the magazine Sàpiens and TV3, with the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia in attendance.

An excellent piece of research work

The seed for this project was planted by the magazine Sàpiens, a part of our communications group, with a special issue on witch hunts, the result of an exhaustive investigation undertaken over the course of fifteen years.

Now, thanks to the transmedia campaign “They weren’t witches, they were women,” we’ve been able to restore the memory of many of those women who were murdered centuries ago.

An Atlas of Witch Hunts

The special issue was accompanied by an online atlas of witch hunts in Catalonia, along with an interactive map that for the first time ever compiled all the trials that had been found up to that point. The issue also included a census containing nearly a thousand records of women who had been accused, tried and executed.

A campaign. A movement

To reinforce this campaign and make it more impactful, we filmed a video with the help of numerous renowned women from different fields.
This retrospective sought to turn an unsparing eye to the past, understand it, rectify it and be able to protect the present and the future.

A fiction that changed reality

The final step in our desire to rehabilitate the memory of those women entailed encouraging multiple political parties to present and approve a formal motion of apology in the Parliament of Catalonia.

The campaign was a global success. Hundreds of media outlets around the world covered it: the BBC, The Guardian, Le Monde and The New York Globe all covered #NoSónBruixes (They Weren’t Witches).

For the #NoSónBruixes campaign, the Generalitat of Catalonia awarded the magazine Sàpiens the National Communication Award.

The documentary won the Laya Award granted by the Department of Equality and Feminism.
