Nadia was an Afghan girl whose body was largely destroyed by a bomb. When she recovered from her wounds, the Taliban ruled the country, banning women from going out to work, among other measures. There were no men in Nadia’s family who could go to work so she decided to change her name and dress like a boy to go out on the street to make a living. She lived with this double identity for 11 years. In 2007 she managed to flee to Europe. The documentary Returning to Nadia portrays her journey back to her country as a woman, how the situation had changed, and, especially, her relationship with her mother, who wants her to stay in the country where she was born.
