Negrers
This documentary about Catalonia’s past involvement in slavery was based on research carried out by the magazine Sàpiens. We connected this past with slavery’s legacy today in the form of racism and discrimination.

Bringing history to prime-time audiences
With the documentary Negrers, the slave-trade and Catalonia we aimed to rediscover a dark past and highlight the debate about how we can redress that horrible stain and what we can do today with the legacy of slavery.
Groundbreaking research
This project started based on the research carried out by the magazine Sàpiens, a part of our communication group, with a report by the best experts on Catalan slave traders. The names and life stories of the main Catalan individuals who participated in the slave trade have been compiled for the first time ever, explaining the entire process and the impact it had on the economy and social life in Catalonia in great detail.
The report was accompanied by an interactive video with detailed biographies of the 50 biggest Catalan slave traders and their businesses.
A major hit with audiences
The documentary, directed by Jordi Portals, was broadcast on the program Sense Ficció on TV3, during prime time, with record audiences tuning in: a 21% share with 435,000 viewers.
It was one of the most watched documentaries of the season and it sparked an important debate on social media about how to address this past.
