Over the years, Catalan society has built a deep and essential connection with Montserrat.
What makes Montserrat such a special place for so many different people? The Moreneta, the monastic community, faith and spirituality, the Escolania boys’ choir, the natural surroundings, sport, culture, ties to Catalan identity, traditions…? Everyone has their own reasons for maintaining a personal — and often intense — relationship with Montserrat.
Here, landscape meets history, culture, and the shared popular memory of many Catalans.
The exhibition is divided into two main sections:
Montserrat for Everyone
Montserrat holds deep meaning for many different people — locals and visitors alike, famous and unknown, of all ages and backgrounds. People share their personal stories and connections to the mountain.
Montserrat, From the Inside
In Montserrat, both today and a thousand years ago, the essence of Benedictine monastic life is lived out — a way of understanding Christianity through the rule of Saint Benedict. The monastic community opens the doors of the monastery to show its daily life and the core elements of its faith.
At the heart of Montserrat is its Benedictine monastery, founded a thousand years ago. It is also the sanctuary that houses the image of the Moreneta, patron saint of Catalonia.
Montserrat is a place of faith. In the monastery lives a community of men who seek God following the teachings of Saint Benedict. Understanding the keys to monastic life and accessing the cloister or private areas of the monastery reveals a lesser-known yet fundamental side of Montserrat.
This space highlights key monastic values: mindful attention, reflection, and silence.
The exhibition combines traditional resources with audiovisual content and interactive immersive experiences. Tradition and innovation go hand in hand, just as they do in Montserrat itself, in this exhibition designed for all audiences.
